The British demand for black tea grew and therefore they struggled to pay for their tea treasures. This was because, at the same time, the tea market was quickly getting monopolised by the Dutch. The British tea traders therefore tried to explore other avenues for acquiring black tea. During the British Raj in India, the Britishers found that a similar genus of the Camellia sinensis plant called the long-leaved Assamese variety was found in India. The situation was win-win as this varsity yielded a bolder crop at a more lucrative return. Thus began mass cultivation of black tea in India during the British Raj and this also made black tea the most popularly demanded tea in the world.

Unlike other tea types, which can taste bitter when steeped with extremely hot water, black tea leaves fare well when steeped in extremely hot water. Another great thing about this variety is that the same black tea leaves can be re-steeped multiple times although the flavour will depreciate with each steeping.
